Chronology of cameras Shew
J.F. Shew & Co. was established in 1849 and around 1885 delivered the first Eclipse under the name Eclipse Instantaneous Hand Apparatus, based on the patent by G. Lowdon no. 4102 from 1895. The Shew Eclipse is a side gate strut camera made in Spanish mahogany and is arguably the first of many similar cameras that were made in England and notably in France.
The rare version with focal plane shutter was made around 1894, and this specimen is for 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches glass plates in double wooden dark slides. The focal plane shutter is a Thornton Pickard with tension control only and delivering speeds in the range 1/200 to 1/1000. The lens is a Ross Double Anastigmat (Goerz patent) with focal length of 9 ½ inches and maximum aperture of 7.7, on helical mount focusing from 4 feet. The brass reflecting viewfinder is made by Adams & Co.
